The focus of Dr. Kelly Sassi's Young Adult Literature class this fall semester 2017 was Indigenous texts. Native American and Indigenous texts is something that Dr. Sassi is very passionate about and she transferred that passion onto the students in her class this semester. For our final project for the class, I wrote a research paper that highlighted that gaps in the educational system around the country, primarily in the U.S. history standards. Native American history and literature are widely excluded from our schools and I wanted to highlight the gaps in the state standards around the country and also show some of the implications that not teaching accurate Indigenous history can have on students.
